Art & Design courses flourish at Campbelltown College
25/01/2012
Campbelltown College, part of TAFE NSW – South Western Sydney Institute, is gearing up for another successful year in their creative arts and graphic design sections after students and teachers alike were recognised for their creativity in a range of industry competitions in 2011.
Students who enrol in courses such as Fine Arts, Ceramics, Graphic Design or Interactive Digital Media this year (enrolments run 24 – 31 January 2012) will be taught by passionate industry experienced teachers and can expect to work on practical assignments.
One of those teachers is part-time graphic design teacher, Simon Bosch, who was awarded a 2011 Walkley Award for Excellence in Journalism in the Artwork category for a powerful illustration he did for a Sydney Morning Herald opinion piece (see here).
Students are encouraged to enter a range of local and national competitions in their study areas to gain hands-on experience in following briefs that demand work produced to industry specifications.
Graphic Design
Campbelltown head teacher of Graphic Design, Interactive Digital Media and Photo Imaging, Kerry Bradley, said her section was very excited to have SWSi students recognised in 2011 competitions such as the Southern Cross Packaging Awards.
“Entering competitions is a great way of measuring our student’s competence against industry standards and against other students around Australia from TAFE and Universities.
“We were very excited about receiving a silver award and a commendation at last year’s Southern Cross Packaging Awards (13 October) which is an Australia-wide competition with students competing against students from other TAFEs, universities and industry RTOs.”
Graphic design graduate, Melinda Williams, of Bradbury received a silver award in the national competition and was offered a position with company Deals Direct as a graphic designer. She says she is also putting a lot of time and effort into her own local freelance graphic design business.
Fine arts and ceramics
Art and ceramics students are also encouraged to enter competitions and public exhibitions, such as the annual Fisher’s Ghost competition, with work by SWSi students Marwa Charmand, Nikki Talaoloa and Michele Arentz and part-time teacher Keith Lane displayed in the 2011 open section.
Fine arts student Marwa, 20, of St Andrews was also chosen as one of eight Australian women commissioned to create a series of artworks for the Muslim Women’s Arts Project for the Casula Powerhouse. This free exhibition will run from Saturday 12 May to Sunday 8 July (10am – 5pm).
