This full-time one year course involves skilled professional practitioners working with students. Notable among these is Australian actor/director Lex Marinos, who directed last year’s TAFE production and performed in the ABC eight-part drama series, The Slap.
Graduates from the 2011 course brought a bit of drama to Chullora Campus Theatre last month when they staged their end of year production, “The Laramie Project” by Moises Kaufman and the Tectonic Theatre Project.
The Certificate III in Theatre and Screen Performance students delivered a full-scale production of the Verbatim theatre piece which harnesses all the skills and knowledge students learned throughout the year.
The play tells the story of the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay University of Wyoming student. Students played a multiplicity of characters representing the reactions of the citizens of Laramie to this horrendous murder. The performances were “moving”, “powerful” and “humorous” according to audience members who attended the graduation event.
For the 2012 audition, students will need to prepare, in advance, a monologue (approximately 2 minutes) taken from a play or film. Auditions will be assessed on the following criteria:
1. Communicate a sense of character
2. Move with appropriate expression
3.Speak with appropriate expression
For those students who wish to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, Bankstown TAFE also delivers Drama as part of its HSC offerings in 2012. The course will enable students to articulate into Theatre and Screen Performance course.
