Campbelltown Art School is a specialist Fine Arts facility located within Campbelltown College. It sits amidst bush gardens on hilly grassy fields yet is a few minutes drive to the urban centre of Campbelltown

The emphasis of the Campbelltown Art School is on promoting excellence in creative practice and in the communication of artistic practice. Alongside its course program and gallery program, the School offers an Artist Studio Residency program to practising, emerging and established artists across a variety of art disciplines.

The School has close ties with the University of Western Sydney, the Campbelltown Art Gallery and the Wedderburn Community of Artists.

Facilities

Campbelltown Art School is located in Blocks M and D of Campbelltown College.

Block M, Ground Floor, contains painting and drawing studios, student painting storage areas, student lockers, sculpture workshop and sculpture outdoor courtyard, the cyclorama (for video and digital photography) and the Campbelltown Art School Gallery. This exhibition space is 78.95 square metres, with a floor to ceiling height of 3.72 metres. The ceiling incorporates a perimeter hanging system and adjustable track lighting. The walls are light white, the floor is dark mahogany vinyl. Moveable screens and plinths are available. When the gallery is not open, work can still be viewed via secure glass panels. A kitchen area is available for preparing and storing refreshments during openings.

Block M, First Floor, contains the specialist printmaking studio (including a wide variety of printing presses, aqua tint room, acid room, reprographic room, silkscreen washout room) and the digital media MAC and PC design studios.

Block D contains the specialist ceramics facility. It includes a wheel forming workshop, an industrial processes workshop, handforming workshop, chemical glaze and glaze application laboratories, 10 gas and electric kilns, a large experimental kiln area, clay recycling rooms, student lockers and storage areas.

    In the above programs of study you will consider cultural and historical influences, observe current trends and apply individual creativity to develop innovative drawings and artworks for exhibition within an art gallery environment. You will refine your experience in and explore in depth a range of materials and processes. You will estimate costs of producing artworks based on the value of materials and time. You will supervise and coordinate the installation of works. You will prepare professional presentation portfolios and exhibition proposals.

    You will research Aboriginal Arts using a broad range of materials and processes to develop innovative art works that relate to Aboriginal culture. You will design, produce and exhibit one off or limited edition art works.

    You will research, design and produce both domestic and aesthetic ceramic ware. You will select appropriate techniques for one off pieces and for pieces that require mass production. You will understand and apply new ceramic technology, safety, and environmental impact procedures as well as study approaches to marketing ceramic ware. You will become proficient in model and mould making, slip casting, wheel forming, hand forming, glazing and firing techniques. You will prepare drawings to meet client specifications and tender for commissions as well as preparing a professional portfolio of your work.

  • Certificate 3 in Ceramics

    You will research ceramic processes to design and produce both purely functional and aesthetic ceramics objects in response to a client's requirement. You will focus on developing innovative ceramic ware designs and on developing a high level of proficiency in a range of technical processes to achieve the desired result. You will be involved in exhibiting your ceramic ware and in preparing a professional portfolio of your work.

Teachers and students

There are 12 academic staff working in the School. All teachers are practising artists, have qualifications in teaching and learning and are technical experts in their field. Class sizes are small with around 15 students per group. Within classes students receive individualised tuition. Classes focus on practical activities and are conducted in specialised workshops. For groups who require classes to be conducted off-site this can be done in community centres.

Students are encouraged to participate in the School's Exhibition Program, regular gallery and artist studio visits and to take up opportunities offered by Art Awards and other art based organisations.

Pathways

The Advanced Diploma and Diploma of Fine Arts offers advanced standing with related Fine Arts Degrees in a number of Universities.

Awards and prizes

A program of awards, sponsorships and prizes is available to students who achieve excellence in a chosen Fine Arts Discipline. Awards are offered by South Western Sydney Institute (Acquisitive).

There are a number of awards and prizes available to all TAFE NSW Fine Art students and in some cases to artists in general. Applications can be obtained from the Head of School.

This TAFE NSW Arts and Design Prize showcases the work of TAFE NSW Art and Design students from around the State. Entries close in August.

Artists Studio Residency program

TAFE NSW South Western Sydney Institute is offering four artists studio based residencies for artists at Campbelltown Art School. The residencies are in Painting/drawing, Ceramics, Sculpture and Printmaking.
