Application process
The application form
The TAFE NSW Course Application Form is your means of applying - it helps TAFE NSW make sure everyone who wants to do an application course is considered in a fair and consistent way.
You may only complete one form, and you can include up to four preferences for courses, campuses and attendance modes (each of your preferences will have its own application code). Don't forget:
- Include copies of all requested documentation
- Make sure you refer to the selection criteria for each course when filling out the form
- If your preferences are for more than one industry area (for example, hospitality and information technology) you will need to copy page 3 of the application form and, for each industry area, prepare separate answers to Section D
- A letter will be sent to tell you that your application has been received
A copy of the application form can be downloaded below.

Changing your mind
If you change your mind about your preferences after you have sent in your application form, you can submit an Amendment Form (see the link at top-right of this page). This must be received by the college where you lodged your original application.
Course application codes
Each combination of course, location and attendance mode has a unique 'application code'. You will need to list, in order of preference, course application codes in Section B of the TAFE NSW Course Application Form.
Up-to-date codes are available via the list of courses requiring application. You can also view a summary of codes as published in the latest TAFE NSW Handbook.
Attendance modes
The 'attendance mode' for a course describes the general pattern of attendance for learning and assessment. The four possible attendance modes are:
- Full-time (FT) A weekly study attendance of between 12 and 30 hours.
- Part-time (Day) (PTD) A weekly day study attendance of 11 hours or less.
- Part-time (Evening) (PTE) A weekly evening study attendance of 11 hours or less.
- Flexible attendance (FX) Flexible attendance allows for learning and assessment in a variety of modes. This may include on campus, off campus, distance learning, online learning, and combinations of any of the above.
Contact your preferred local college for more detailed information about each course's attendance mode(s).
Selection criteria
Selection criteria are the factors taken into account when TAFE NSW assesses and scores your application and decides if you will be offered a place in a course. They are included as part of the course entry for application courses.
For most application courses, you are allocated points for each of the selection criteria, so it's important to refer to them when filling out your application form.
The selection criteria of most courses are weighted in the following way:
- Your ability to complete the course = 60pts
- Education and training = 20pts
- Paid or unpaid work experience = 20pts
- Life and community experience = 20pts
- Your reasons for wanting to do the course, and how the course is relevant to your career plans or personal goals = 30 points
- Any further evidence in support of your application = 10 pts
Total possible = 100pts
In some courses selection criteria may be weighted differently for school leavers. (TAFE NSW considers you a 'school leaver' if you left school in the past five years.) This is to take into account the fact that school leavers probably have had less opportunity than other applicants to meet some of the criteria (for example, with regard to employment experiences).
Notification of the result of your application
You will be notified, in writing, of the result of your application.
If you are made an offer for your second, third, or fourth preference you will remain on the standby list for any higher preferences for which you are eligible. You will be contacted by the college if a place becomes available.
It is recommended that you accept the first offer of a course place that you receive, as you may not receive an offer from a standby list. If you have enrolled but then receive another offer and decide to accept it, you will still be able to change.
