School-Based Apprenticeships and School-Based Traineeships (SBAT) provide the opportunity to combine paid part-time employment, study towards a nationally recognised credential at TAFE NSW, whilst continuing at school and completing the HSC.

Depending on your pattern of study, you can also achieve an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).
We can offer you:

We can assist you and your school by:
- undertaking school visits to assist career advisers promote SBAT's to students and parents
- provision of "Fact Sheets" and other promotional material
- provision of expert advice on traineeships and apprenticeships
- attendance at subject selection evenings
- participation in Career Expos, and School Open Days
- organizing information packs for distribution to students
- advising schools of job vacancies in targeted vocational areas
SWSi also coordinates the promotion, application, recruitment and selection process via:
- information sessions for parents and students
- receiving EOI’s
- employer interview
- trial of work experience
- offer of a SBA or SBT
Trade school is a joint initiative between TAFE NSW – South Western Sydney Institute, Department of Education and Training – South Western Sydney Region and local industry to provide vocational opportunities for local students.
Factors to consider before applying
Eligibility: you must apply in year 10 (or early in year 11), with the intention of commencing off-the-job training in years 11 and 12; you must be at least 15 years of age
Competing demands: you will need to be able to balance on-the-job and off-the-job training requirements with the normal academic demands of your other school subjects
Support: to be successful it is important that you have the support of your parents, and school
Structure of training: the day and hours for on-the-job training will be negotiated with the employer, and will generally reflect the needs of the industry; the organization of the off-the-job training will be influenced by a number of factors (e.g. on-the-job requirements, number of students in cohort, preference of schools, availability of facilities, opportunities for holiday delivery.)
